"Within this context, the original mission of the new hospital, as established by the General Assembly in 1797, was to provide for the relief of indigent sick persons, and for the reception and care of lunatics." -(Acts of 1797)

Spring Grove Mental Hospital is America's second oldest psychiatric hospital. It is still open for treating patients, as well as training students. Not all of the buildings are functional at the moment, and renovation of the Main building is underway. On June 24, 2010 I spent a bright, humid, scorching afternoon wandering around the closed and hazardous building, taking pictures as I went. One less bright day I will return and devote more time to the grounds and the peculiar artifacts lost in the flooded stairwells and curious barred 'turrets.' The campus' powerhouse is an impressive structure with a nice Industrial Revolution Smokestack rising high above the grounds. I entered the hospital grounds from Asylum Road, but curiously they leave that particular street name off of the official maps.

More information is available from the hospital's website at www.springgrove.com
